Maitake literally means dancing mushroom and in Great Britain is known under the name "Hen". The name is probably due to its growth pattern.

In Asia, the maitake is a popular edible mushroom.

It is found in our forests and in vast areas of the subtropics and the temperate zones. Its value for human health, however, has been mainly researched and exploited in Asia and more recently, the US, where it is also cultivated in large amounts.

In ancient Japan, knowlegde of the locations where it grew was passed down through generations and kept in great secrecy.

Maitake contains various vitamins of the B complex, high levels of ergosterol (the precursor of vitamin D) and other minerals and trace elements (iron, zinc, potassium and magnesium). Through its various polysaccharides, the maitake supports our immune system.
